Biology and EcologyThe Department of Biology and Ecology is a part of educational-scientific institution (Faculty of Sciences) the main activity of which is the education of experts of biology related profile (research oriented professionals, as well as teachers for secondary and elementary schools) and experts of ecology related profile. Considering that biology makes the basic or complementary field of science in a large number of fields of scientific-research work and practice, the education of experts of biological profile with specific sub-fields who will make a unique technological unit in scientific-research and development laboratories of certain institutions together with the basic profile of expert is of undeniable significance. The studies at the Department for Biology and Ecology are graded and organised in accordance with the 4+1 year principle. Undergraduate (basic) academic studies
Master academic studies
Doctoral studies
The work with students, namely lectures and exercises, are carried out in modernly equipped amphitheatres, classrooms designated to exercises and laboratories. Our Department disposes with a rich collection of plant and animal material that is available to students both for educational and scientific-research work. A mandatory part of studies of biology and ecology encompasses attending the field classes where students collect plant and animal material, learn how to recognise it and classify it in the process of creating of their own collections.
The teaching and scientific staffs of the Department are included in scientific-research projects of international, national, and local character within which basic and applied researches are carried out in all biological disciplines.
Within the co-operation of the University of Novi Sad with the University Prince of Songhkla, Hat Yai from Thailand, the co-operation between our Department and their Department for Biology has been established through the exchange of students and teaching staff, as well as through the participation at joint scientific-research projects. Our Department has established similar co-operation with the International Sakharov Environmental University in Minsk, Belarus. Apart from the above-mentioned international co-operation of our Department, the students may also have access to mobility studies at all academic levels through scholarships for studies in the European Union Member States that the University of Novi Sad is a member of. The scholarships of Erasmus Mundus, JoinEUSEE, and Campus Europea programs attract the highest interest. Through various programs our students can attend specialised courses, or obtains scholarships at a larger number of European universities with the undivided support of the Department. Therefore, Europe has never been closer for young and ambitious future science professionals.
Our students are gathered within the Scientific-research Society of Biology and Ecology Students “Josif Pančić“, which was established 30 years ago. Through the work of the Society the students who are interested are given the opportunity to learn about the principles and methods of scientific-research work, participate actively in elaboration of scientific papers, implement ideas and present the results they have achieved.
Opportunities after graduation
Due to its wideness and diversity, the Department for Biology and Ecology prepares students fro various future professions. Currently, our graduate students work in elementary schools, grammar schools, and vocational secondary school, in scientific and professional institutions, development and applied laboratories, in agriculture, veterinary institutions, forestry, medical institutions, institutions dealing with ecology and environmental protection, etc. both in the country and abroad.
