Science at the service of Europe

Message from the Director General of DG Research and Innovation, Mr Robert Jan-Smits.

Dear Reader,

Investing in Research and Innovation is a sure means to a more competitive and more resilient European economy.

For this reason, the EU2020 Strategy for growth and jobs gives Research and Innovation a prominent role. Since 2007, the main funding instrument to implement this policy has been the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7).

Through this instrument, the European Commission seeks to convert scientific breakthroughs into technologies and products that can transform sectors like energy or transport (often in partnership with major private actors from each field) but also to address the main challenges that affect our daily life, from our health to our environment.

By following the link below, you will see some examples of how research supported by the European Commission in the past year has the potential to make a real difference to our lives and to the future of the EU.
