THE STRUCTURE OF THE STUDY PROGRAMME

 


а) Name and the goals of the Study Program: Undergraduate studies in Chemistry

 

The aims of the programme are:

  • To provide students with a broad knowledge and understanding in of key chemical concepts
  • To develop in students a range of practical skills so that they can understand and assess risks and work safely in the laboratory
  • To develop in students the ability to apply standard methodology to the solution of problems in chemistry
  • To provide students with a knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to graduate employment or to further studies in chemistry or multi-disciplinary areas involving chemistry

b) Type of the study and the outcome of the education process: Undergraduate studies in Chemistry

 

On successful completion of this programme students would be able to:

  • demonstrate a systematic understanding of fundamental chemical principles with the ability to apply that knowledge to the solution of theoretical and practical problems
  • work safely in a laboratory environment,
  • planned and performed experiments and objectively adopt, estimates and present the results of research,
  • develop an awareness of issues within chemistry that overlap with other related disciplines.

c) Professional title, academic, or scientific title.

 

After the four-year study, i.e. by earning 240 ECTS credits, the graduate obtains the title – Graduate Chemist. Depending on the chosen elective courses in the Diploma Supplement will be specified one of narrower area, such as:

  • Graduate Chemist – Analytical Chemistry,
  • Graduate Chemist – Inorganic/Physical Chemistry,
  • Graduate Chemist – Organic Chemistry,
  • Graduate Chemist – Methodology of Chemistry Teaching

There is possibility for student to finish his/her studying after three years of study and earned 180 ECTS, then acquires the professional name of the chemist.


d) Admission conditions.

 

A candidate can enroll in the first level studies only under criteria and procedures defined by the open competition that is announced by the University of Novi Sad and realized by the Faculty of Sciences. A candidate, who has completed the secondary education in duration of four years (gymnasium or relevant high school), has the right to enroll in the first year of Undergraduate academic studies. Ranking of candidates enrolling for the first year of Undergraduate studies is determined by the overall secondary school marks and points scored at the entrance exam. In reference to the points generated on basis of candidates’ secondary school marks and enrolment test score, a Faculty determines an integral rank list.


e) List of the compulsory and elective study areas, courses with an outline of their contents


The compulsory and the elective courses are listed in Tables 5.2 along with the ECTS credits and weekly hours of lectures and exercises. The outlines of the contents of the courses are given Appendix 2.


f) Teaching mode and the time allotted for the realization of particular study forms


First level studies organized as Undergraduate academic studies in Chemisrty lasts four academic years (8 semesters) in which students have to earn at least 240 ECTS credits.


g) Credit values of particular courses


Each course carries a certain number of ECTS credits, specified in the Book of Courses.



h) Credit value of the Diploma work in the first level studies


The final year of the study program Undergraduate Academic Studies in Chemistry ends up by completing and defending of the Diploma thesis. The Diploma thesis is a result of the independent student's work, which represents the final exam for obtaining the academic title the Graduate chemist.

In the preparation and defending of the Diploma thesis, the student demonstrates his/her capacity for independent work and creativity in the application of all the acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The students are engaged in doing their Diploma thesis in the last semester. This work is valued 12 ECTS credits.

If a student chooses to terminate the study after the third year and earned 180 ECTS, he/she is obligated to have in the sixth semester Project (credit value 6 ECTS). The Project is the final exam for the academic title of Chemist.

Detailed regulations concerning the registration, conditions, and the mode of defending this work are prescribed by the Statute and the corresponding acts of the Faculty.


i) Prerequisites for the registration for particular courses or group of courses


The Book of Courses contains the prerequisites for the registering for particular courses.


j) Way of choosing courses from the other study programs


The student can choose any course from the offered list of courses of the study program he/she is enrolled in, but a prerequisite is to earn at least 60 ECTS credits in one academic year. As a rule, the registration for the elective courses is carried out at the time of registering for the study year. Lessons will be organized if the total number of students chose to attend the given course is above the limit envisaged by the study program encompassing the given elective course.

There is a possibility of choosing courses from some other study programs. In that case he/she is obliged to submit an application to the Council of the Department, which decides about the acceptance/rejection in accordance with the curriculum of the given study program.


k) Conditions for transferring to another study program within the same or similar study areas


There is the possibility of transferring from one to another study program based on the ECTS system for the same and similar courses. A request for transition must be officially made by written application to the Council of the Department.

THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY PROGRAMME

 

The purpose of the study program of Undergraduate Academic Studies in Chemistry is to acquire sound and broad knowledge in all main areas of chemistry (inorganic, organic, physical, analytical chemistry, biochemistry) supported by solid knowledge of mathematics and physics in order to be competent for the work in chemical laboratories in all branches of the industry, in addition to in the developmental, control, service, and research laboratories, as well as in educational institutions (primary and secondary schools). The level of the knowledge acquired will enable the graduates a further upgrading of chemical education through the research and practical application.

 

 

THE GOALS OF THE STUDY PROGRAMME

 

The study program Undergraduate Academic Studies in Chemistry provide the students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills, that enables a good understanding of concepts / terms in chemistry (analytical, organic, inorganic etc), which is achieved through the defined objectives of the study program.

The objectives of the study programme are to:

  • develop the necessary knowledge base and understanding of fundamental chemical principles;
  • enable students to acquire the necessary practical skills to identify and solve problems, and to understand and use quantitative techniques for the analysis and interpretation of data
  • provide a foundation and encouragement for the pursuit of professional qualifications and higher degrees
  • development of teacher competencies necessary for future teachers of chemistry

 

THE SKILLS OF STUDENTS UPON COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAMME

 

General and course-specific competencies of students

On successful completion of this programme students develops the following general competencies:

  • a systematic understanding of the basic physical and chemical principles,
  • ability to work safely in a laboratory environment,
  • competent in respect of information technology
  • competent in respect of oral communication and presentation skills.

 

Also, the student improves and following scientific research and professional competences:

  • ability to apply fundamental chemical principles to a variety of practical applications,
  • competency in quantitative techniques relevant to chemical theory and data handling,
  • ability to perform standard laboratory experiments on skillfully and reliable manner,
  • ability to formulate routine research problems precisely and systematically.

 

Achieved a standard of knowledge and competence to enable the student to be enrolled in second level of academic education.


 

THE CURRICULUM

 

Studying the Undergraduate Academic Studies in Chemistry takes a minimum of four academic years to complete. Students studying take courses to a total of 60 credits in each academic year. Each course is self-contained in terms of assessment and a student is assessed at the end of each course.

Study programme curricula includes a total of 33 courses:

- in the first year there are 6 compulsory and 3 elective courses,

- in the second year there are 5 compulsory and 3 elective courses

- in the third year, also 5 are compulsory and 3 elective courses, and

- in the fourth year there are 3 compulsory and 5 elective courses as well as research investigation work as a is part of Diploma thesis.

There is a possibility that student end its study after the third year and earned 180 ECTS.

The minimum of ECTS credits earned in one academic is 60. The student may, but not necessarily, choose elective courses from each of the menu position. For example, in one semester the student can choose two elective courses from two elective blocks and acquire more than 30 ECTS points, and in the next semester choose one or none of the elective courses, if, all together with compulsory courses, he/she earned the minimum of 60 ECTS, assuming the minimum of 20 hours of active teaching in one semester.

* If student does not want to continue his studies, i.e. wonted to finish the study after the third year he is obligated to do the Project.
